First let me reitterate:
- Hakpaks are the official Bioware method for distributing Custom Content.
With that said, following are the details you need to know to use the NWN Hak Pak Editor Utility. Remeber this is information on the use of the utility, to learn how to impliment Hakpaks in the toolset, see Adding Custom Content and Hakpak
Location
If you installed neverwinter in the default directory, the Hak Pak Editor utility path should be NeverwinterNights\NWN\utils\nwhak.exe. If not, you will have to search for nwhak.exe on your computer.
If nwhak.exe is not on your computer you can download it at ?.
Menu
- File|New
- Discontinue editing the current Hakpak, and start a new one.
- File|Open
- Open an existing Hakpak file for editing.
- File|Merge...
- For merging multipule Hakpaks together, see Merging Hakpaks.
- File|Close
- Close the current Hakpak file.
- File|Save
- Saves the current Hakpak file with its present name.
- File|Save AS
- Saves the current Hakpak file with a different name.
- File|Exit
- Exit the Hak Pak Editor.
- Resource|Add
- Browse for resource files to add to the Hakpak file.
- Resource|Remove
- Remove currently highlighted resource(s) from the Hakpak file.
- Resource|Export
- Export the currently highlighted resource from the Hakpak, for use outside of the Hakpak file; see Getting Resources from a Hakpak file.
- Resource|Export All
- Export all of the resources in the current Hakpak, for use outside of the Hakpak file; see Getting Resources from a Hakpak file.
Fields
Title - a descriptive tile for the Hakpak.
URL: - a field to advertise your web address.
Description - as it says a description of the Hakpak; things like: what's in it, what module it is used with, effects it has on game play, etc.
Resource List Box - An itemized list of all the resources contained in the Hakpak file. You can effect the display order of the files by utilizing the Resource, Type, and Size buttons at the top of the list.
- To add resources:
- Drag n' Drop the files from a folder onto the Hak Pack Editor; or
- Use Resource|Add to browse for the files.
- To remove resources:
- Highlight the resource in the list box and press the Delete key on your keyboard; or
- Highlight the resources and use Resource|Remove form the menu bar.

Making a New Hakpak
To make a new Hakpak:
- Start the Hak Pak Editor utility.
- Fill in the fields.
- Add/remove resources from the list.
- Save with File|Save or File|Save As to create the Hakpak file.
- Exit the Hak Pak Editor.
By default the Hak Pak Editor will save to your NWN hak directory (where Hakpak need to be for use in game and in the toolset), however you can change the path it saves to when saving.
Making Changes to a Hakpak
To make changes to an existing Hakpak:
- Start the Hak Pak Editor utility.
- Open an existing Hakpak file.
- Add/remove resource as required.
- Remember to edit the other fields as necessary.
- Save the Hakpak file with the same or different name.
- Exit the Hak Pak Editor.
Merging Hakpaks

Getting Resources from a Hakpak
To get resource files from a Hakpak:
- Start the Hak Pak Editor utility.
- Open an existing Hakpak file.
- Extract resources:
- Highlight resource(s) in the list box and use Resource|Export; or
- use Resource|Export All to export all of the resource files.
- Exit the Hak Pak Editor.
Notes
While using any of the menu commands on resources files in the resource list box, remember that <shift> and <ctrl> can speed up your file selection process.
